SAB Conforms to EU Directives Regarding Hazardous Substances

Every year more than 6 million tons of electronic devices are scrapped in the European Union. These devices, which include heavy metals and flame retardant materials, present a health risk for humans as well as for the environment. In order to decrease the content of harmful substances in waste materials, the European Parliament has passed the directive RoHS 2002/95/EG (Restriction of Hazardous Substances). This directive pertains to materials, as well as their additives, that shall no longer be used. The following substances are to be eliminated:

  • Lead
  • Mercury
  • Cadmium
  • Chromium VI
  • Polybrominated biphenyl PBB
  • Polybrominated diphenyl ether PBDE

The aim of the RoHS directive is to set legal guidelines regarding the limitation of harmful substances in electronic devices and to help reduce health and environmental risks. However, there is a transition period for national acceptance and manufacturers are not legally required to conform to the new directives until July 1st, 2006.

Reducing materials that may present health and environmental risks has become increasingly important to SAB within the scope of global responsibility for health and the environment. Based on the different directives as well as on customers´ requirements, SAB has specified the following quantity and content limits below:

Lead Mercury Cadmium Chromium VI PBB PBDE
< 0,1% < 0,1% < 0,01% < 0,1% < 0,1% < 0,1%

SAB is already able to confirm the absence of harmful substances according to the RoHS directive for nearly 98% of all standard catalog items. In all probability we will be able to confirm the absence of harmful materials in all raw materials and thus the conformity of our cables according to the EU directive sometime this year. Furthermore, there is a new appendix to the prescription of hazardous materials (appendix IV no. 24 – flame retardants) EU directive 76/769/EWG that is already legally valid. Consequently, the following substances are no longer permitted to be used:

  • Penta-brominated diphenyl ether
  • Octa-brominated diphenyl ether

The quantity and content limits below are as follows.

Penta-brominated diphenyl ether Octa-brominated diphenyl ether
< 0,1% < 0,1%

SAB Worldwide guarantees the compliance with this EU directive and ensures that the described substances are not contained in our raw materials.

Q&A

Q. Can you give a brief explanation of Harmonized wire and Harmonized cable found in Chapter G of SAB's full line catalog?

A. Cenelec, a non-profit European Committee for Electrotechnical Standardization, was formed to develop safety standards for the cooperating European community. The electrical standards for wire and cable are classified as Harmonized. <HAR>

This standard was developed to establish safety and uniformity for wire and cable being utilized by the European Union. (EU) The products pertain to PVC wire and cable and rubber insulated cordage and cables. Products that are in compliance are marked accordingly. SAB does offer specific products that are UL/CSA/CE as well as Harmonized. For further details contact your SAB representative.
