Ask our Engineer

Question: As I look through your catalog I notice SAB has at least 3 different construction methods used in the manufacture of your cable for EMI shielding protection.  I require protection of my 24-volt control and data signals so no noise or EMI interference is induced into my system affecting the control system in a negative way.  Please explain the difference?

Answer: The most common shielding we provide is found in the following cable families:  Control Cable CC600 CY, (Cat. Page A3), Continuous Flex Cable S960 CY (Cat. Page B3), Silicone Cable (Cat. Page H3), BUS Cable (Cat. I11).  The screening provided is a tinned copper braiding which you will notice provides a crisscross pattern effectively removing over 90% of noise that could be induced into your control system.

For our VFD cable (Cat. Pages D17- D19), we provide a 2nd level of protection in the cable.  We start off with the tinned copper braiding as described above however because of the high level of noise induced by a Variable Frequency Drive, we provide a 2nd level of protection using a copper foil.  The combination of copper braid and copper foil will effectively remove 100% of noise that could be induced into the control system.

The 3rd method you noticed is found in the construction of SAB’s Torsion Cable section, (Cat. Page C2 & C4).  The application of this cable is usually on a Robot, which can have the cable twisting up to 450 degrees.  To provide both the shielding and the twisting of cable, a different type of screening had to be developed.  In this case, a spiral shield is used to effectively reduce the EMI emissions while still allowing the cable to be twisted.

Summary:  Many different issues are considered in the manufacturing of cable:  environment, electrical & electronic characteristics, the customer’s application, temperature requirements, etc…  Each cable manufactured is tested to meet the highest standards required by our customers.

New Products Now Available From SAB Cable

We continue to offer new products to meet the demands of our customers. Take a look at these new products and show them to your customers.

SC 600 HDTR (SILICONE JACKETED MATERIAL RATED TO 200 DEGREE C)
This is a heavy duty multi-conductor cable with tear resistant silicone jacket, which is a good alternative to Teflon cables. With the temperature range up to 200 C (392 F) it offers great solutions for customers such as: Steel Mills, Glass Factories, Baking Equipment and any Machine builder requiring high temperature protection. The cable can also be used where salt water is present.

DC 105 C (DATA CABLE RATED TO 105 DEGREES C)
This new family of cables offers you a higher temperature rating and is available in 3 constructions: unshielded, shielded & shielded with Twisted Pair with a drain wire. All cables are constructed to meet a 300-volt rating. Applications include: Data or Control signals for Industrial Controls, Process Control, Security Systems, Medical Technologies. UL/CSA CM rated.

DR 720 & 721 P (REELING CABLE)
SAB’s pendant and reel cable is a high flex, reinforced control cable designed to handle frequent reeling and unreeling under tensile load. Applications include pulleys, drums, transportation systems, horizontal rolling systems and pendant applications. Perfect for applications where constant winding and unwinding of the cable is required.

SABCLEAN (CLEANROOM CABLES)
SAB now manufactures clean room certified cables for applications that require
stringent guidelines where out gassing and particulates must be limited.

Success Story: SAB Cable supplies the Wind Power industry Worldwide

Wind Power applications are on the rise as the world searches for alternative sources of energy.  As the applications for Wind Power increase, so does the demand for reliable, dependable, high-performance flexible cables to help harness this limitless source of energy.  SAB North America has received a number of orders from different distributors for the following Wind Power applications:

Servo Cables with built in feed-back cables.  As wind conditions change, quick feed-back is necessary for functions such as starting and stopping of blades, varying the speed of the turbine blades or rotating their position.

Multi-conductor Control Cables.  Our CC 600 Cables allow all signal functions to be controlled in one cable that is easily installed and connected to the central control cabinet through a row of terminal blocks.

Wind turbines can be installed in harsh environments such as mountain tops, dry deserts or even in the ocean.  SAB’s Silicone Cables are currently being tested to determine how well they stand up to the ocean’s harsh saltwater environment.

Our reliability, dependability and engineering as a cable manufacturer is helping to promote SAB as a leading cable supplier to the Wind Power industry.  Look for these and other new opportunities in this growing industry as well as other industries with our ever-expanding product offering.
